About Us

The Fleetwood Insurance Group has its origins in two well-established insurance agencies that served Kent County, Maryland. The Kirby-Fleetwood Agency was founded in 1946 and operated in the Townshend Building in downtown Chestertown. Around the same time, the Townshend-Kane Agency was established and operated in the Hubbard Building, now known as the Imperial Hotel.

In 1957, the Kirby-Fleetwood Agency changed its name to Fleetwood-MacBeth, Inc., under which it operated until 1968. During this period, the two agencies remained competitors until deciding to merge in 1968, creating Fleetwood, Kane, MacBeth & McCown, Inc. (FKM&M). This merger made FKM&M the largest insurance agency in Kent County.

As the business grew, FKM&M outgrew its Chestertown office and relocated in 1971 to a location just outside of town, where the company remains headquartered today. In 1974, Edward Athey joined the agency, prompting another name change to Fleetwood, Athey, MacBeth & McCown, Inc. (FAM&M). Under Ed’s leadership, the agency thrived and laid a foundation of values and service that continues to guide Fleetwood Insurance Group today.

In 2003, Creg Fleetwood joined FAM&M, welcomed to the team by his grandfather, Robert T. Fleetwood. Thus, began his tenure with the agency, spanning over two decades and counting.

In 2007, the agency became a wholly owned subsidiary of The Peoples Bank, a local community bank. A decade later, in 2018, the agency rebranded as Fleetwood Insurance Group to better reflect its focus on insurance services.

In early 2019, Fleetwood Insurance Group expanded by acquiring Bartlett Griffin & Vermilye (BGV Insurance) and opening a branch office in Easton. The roots of BGV Insurance date back to 1967, when W. Moorhead Vermilye, William Griffin Sr., and Murray Bartlett purchased the Moffett Insurance Agency from Howard Moffett. Over the years, the agency grew and transitioned through partnerships, with William Griffin Jr. and James C. (Josh) Johnson IV taking ownership in 1995. Following Fleetwood’s acquisition in 2019, Griffin Jr. retired, and Josh Johnson continued with the company. In 2025, BGV officially rebranded to Fleetwood Insurance Group, and still operates with the same team of experienced employees.

The Acquisition of BGV

Throughout its history, Fleetwood Insurance Group has been deeply committed to community involvement and building lasting relationships with its partners and clients. The team actively supports local initiatives, participating as Character Counts coaches, Junior Achievement mentors, Relay for Life volunteers, Special Olympics coaches, and board members for various organizations. Fleetwood Insurance Group is proud to serve the community and aims to leave it better for future generations.
